1. SHORT GREY
Also known as: Zeta Reticulans, Greys, Grays, EBEs (Extraterrestrial Biological Entities)
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | 3.0 - 4.5 feet (0.9 - 1.4 m); most commonly reported at ~3.5 feet |
| Skin color/texture | Pale grey to dark grey; smooth, sometimes described as rubbery or having a slight sheen; occasionally described as slightly translucent |
| Head | Disproportionately large relative to body; pear-shaped or inverted teardrop; cranium bulges at rear and sides |
| Eyes | Enormous, black, almond-shaped or wraparound; no visible pupils or iris in most accounts; occupy a large percentage of the face; slightly angled upward at outer edges. Eric Davis describes them as eyes that "absorb rather than reflect light" |
| Nose | Vestigial — two small nostrils or slight bumps; no protruding nose structure |
| Mouth | Thin slit; rarely seen to move during communication; no visible lips in most accounts |
| Ears | Absent or vestigial — small holes or slight indentations on sides of head |
| Hands/Fingers | 3-4 long, thin fingers (most commonly 4); no visible fingernails; sometimes described with suction-cup-like tips |
| Body | Extremely slender and frail-appearing; thin neck; narrow torso; thin limbs with little visible musculature. No digestive system, no reproductive organs, single consolidated organ mass. Waste excretion through skin pores (ammonia odor) |
| Clothing | Tight-fitting one-piece suits, usually grey, silver, or blue-black; occasionally described as nude with no visible genitalia |
Behavioral Characteristics
- Communication: Telepathic; experiencers report "hearing" thoughts directly in their mind without the being's mouth moving. Communication is often described as emotionally flat or clinical. Witnesses report paralysis during encounters.
- Typical activities: Medical examinations (especially reproductive procedures), sample collection, implant insertion, paralysis of subjects, memory suppression/screen memories
- Emotional display: Minimal to none. Often described as emotionally detached, clinical, or robotic. Some experiencers report a single "leader" Grey showing marginally more emotional range.
- Movement: Smooth, gliding motions; sometimes described as moving in unison as though coordinated by a single intelligence
The Drone Theory
The most commonly encountered entity because they are the most numerous. They do the fieldwork — survey, sample, monitor, seed. They are instruments, not decision-makers. They don't have agendas — they have programming.
Some researchers (including David Jacobs and Budd Hopkins) propose that Short Greys may not be biologically alive at all — that they are artificially constructed robotic or cyborg servants. This would explain their mechanical behavior, apparent lack of individual personality, and hive-mind coordination:
- Identical appearance across all accounts (zero individual variation = manufactured)
- No apparent independent decision-making
- Synchronized movement suggesting networked control
- The biological template they're based on is not mammalian. The body plan — large head, vestigial features, thin limbs, consolidated organs — could be a simplified, miniaturized version of an insectoid species. If the Mantis beings are their creators, the Grey body plan makes more sense as a drone derived from insectoid biology.
Associated Craft Types
- Classic disc/saucer (most common)
- Small ovoid or egg-shaped craft
- Larger disc-shaped "motherships" with smaller craft
- Occasionally reported with black triangles (typically alongside other being types)
Well-Documented Cases
-
Betty and Barney Hill Abduction (1961) — Lancaster, New Hampshire. The foundational modern abduction case. Under separate hypnosis sessions with Dr. Benjamin Simon, both Hills described short beings with grey skin, large dark eyes, and small mouths. Betty described being shown a "star map" later identified by Marjorie Fish as pointing to Zeta Reticuli.
-
Travis Walton Abduction (1975) — Snowflake, Arizona. Walton disappeared for five days after six co-workers witnessed him being struck by a beam of light from a hovering disc. He described encountering grey entities (about 5 feet tall, large bald heads, enormous dark eyes, small features, wearing loose-fitting orange/tan coveralls, moving as a group) and later human-like beings aboard a craft.
-
Whitley Strieber Encounters (1985-ongoing) — Upstate New York. Author's experiences described in Communion (1987). His detailed descriptions of Short Greys (particularly the cover image) became the most iconic visual representation of this type.
-
Ariel School Encounter (1994) — Ruwa, Zimbabwe. Over 60 schoolchildren independently reported seeing a craft land near their playground and small beings emerge. The beings had waxy, pale skin; large, oval, black eyes described as "lower on the cheek than human eyes" (one child said the eyes were "the size of a rugby ball"); long, straight, black hair (unlike classic hairless Greys); shiny, tight-fitting black suits; very thin arms and legs; small nostrils; and a slit mouth. They communicated telepathic warnings about environmental destruction. Some African children interpreted the beings as "tikoloshes" — creatures from Shona and Ndebele folklore — demonstrating how cultural context shapes interpretation. Investigated by Dr. John Mack of Harvard. 62 children aged 5-12 independently drew remarkably consistent pictures.
-
The Allagash Abductions (1976) — Allagash, Maine. Four men on a canoe trip reported being taken aboard a craft and subjected to medical examinations by short grey beings. All four produced consistent accounts under separate hypnosis sessions.
-
Antonio Villas Boas (1957) — Minas Gerais, Brazil. One of the earliest documented abduction claims. Described small beings in grey suits with large eyes.
Geographic Distribution
- Highest concentration: United States (particularly rural and suburban areas)
- Significant reports: United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, South Africa (Ariel School), France
- Global spread: Reports from over 40 countries; culturally consistent descriptions across regions
- Notable absence/rarity: Fewer reports from East and South Asia relative to population (possibly cultural reporting factors)
- Regional note: Chinese encounter data is radically different from American data — beings speak Mandarin and give educational lectures rather than performing medical exams
Temporal Trends
- Rare before 1961 (Hill case); the dominant reported type from the 1980s onward
- Pre-1960s reports tended toward human-looking beings (Nordics)
- Explosion of Grey reports after the Hill case media coverage and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
- Remain the most commonly reported physical NHI type in the 21st century
- Critical observation: Greys replaced Nordics as the dominant reported entity between the 1950s and 1970s-80s. In the early contactee era (1950s), human-looking beings were most commonly described. By the abduction era (1970s onward), Greys dominated. This shift might reflect a change in operational deployment — the operators (human-looking entities) stepped back, and the drones (Greys) took over the majority of direct fieldwork. Automation of the monitoring program.
Role in Multi-Type Encounters
- Typically function as workers or drones, performing tasks under direction
- Often reported alongside Tall Greys (who appear to command them) and/or Mantis beings (who appear to oversee)
- Some abductees report Greys working in the presence of Nordics, though in subordinate roles
- Frequently described as operating in groups of 3-6 with coordinated, synchronized behavior
2. TALL GREY
Also known as: Grey Commanders, Tall Grays, Elder Greys
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | 6.0 - 7.0 feet (1.8 - 2.1 m) |
| Skin color/texture | Slightly lighter or darker grey than Short Greys; smoother texture; sometimes described with a slight blue or tan tinge |
| Head | Large but more proportional to body than Short Greys; similar pear shape but elongated |
| Eyes | Large, dark, almond-shaped — similar to Short Greys but sometimes described as slightly more expressive or with a subtle internal luminosity |
| Facial features | More defined than Short Greys; slightly more individualized features; occasionally described with faint wrinkles suggesting age |
| Hands/Fingers | 4 long fingers (most common); longer and more graceful than Short Grey hands |
| Body | Slender but with more apparent structure; longer limbs in proportion; more upright posture |
| Clothing | Robes or cloaks (often described as flowing garments vs. the Short Greys' tight suits); sometimes a medallion or insignia on the chest |
How They Differ from Short Greys
- Size: 2-3 feet taller on average
- Demeanor: More authoritative, deliberate; described as "commanding" rather than "clinical"
- Individuality: Witnesses can sometimes distinguish individual Tall Greys; Short Greys are often described as indistinguishable from one another
- Communication: More sophisticated telepathic exchanges; experiencers report receiving complex concepts, philosophical ideas, or emotional content from Tall Greys (vs. simple commands from Short Greys)
- Autonomy: Appear to make decisions independently; Short Greys appear to follow instructions
Behavioral Characteristics
- Communication: Telepathic, but described as more nuanced and emotionally resonant than Short Grey communication
- Typical activities: Directing Short Greys during procedures; communicating directly with the abductee (often one-on-one); appearing to perform oversight or "quality control" roles; conducting complex or psychological aspects of interactions
- Emotional display: Slightly more expressive; some experiencers report sensing curiosity, concern, or even something resembling compassion
Hierarchical Relationship to Short Greys
- Consistently described as the command tier in a Grey hierarchy
- Short Greys defer to Tall Greys — stopping activities, stepping aside, or changing behavior when a Tall Grey enters
- Some researchers (including Budd Hopkins and David Jacobs) proposed that Short Greys may be biological robots or clones manufactured by Tall Greys
- The "drone" hypothesis: Short Greys operate as extensions of a collective consciousness directed by Tall Greys
Associated Craft Types
- Same craft as Short Greys (they appear together aboard the same vessels)
- More often reported in larger craft (suggesting command hierarchy requires a bigger operational platform)
Well-Documented Cases
- Betty Andreasson Luca (1967) — South Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Described both short and tall grey beings with distinct behavioral differences.
- Barney Hill's hypnosis sessions (1961) — Described a "leader" figure taller than the others.
- David Jacobs' research cases (1990s-2000s) — Multiple abductees across Jacobs' studies described a taller Grey directing procedures.
- Budd Hopkins' research (1980s-1990s) — Hopkins documented the hierarchical Grey structure across hundreds of regression sessions.
- The Coronel De Freitas case (Brazil, 1979) — Military witness described Tall Greys commanding smaller ones.
Geographic Distribution
- Same global spread as Short Greys (they co-occur)
- Slightly more prominent in North American and European accounts
Temporal Trends
- Reports emerge later than Short Grey reports — becoming more specific from the mid-1980s onward as researchers began distinguishing subtypes
- The distinction between Short and Tall Greys became formalized in abduction research literature in the 1990s
3. NORDIC / TALL WHITE
Also known as: Pleiadians, Space Brothers, Tall Whites (Hall), Blonds, Venusians (historical)
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | 6.0 - 7.0 feet (1.8 - 2.1 m); Tall Whites per Hall: 5'10" - 6'5" standard, up to 8'+ in later life stages |
| Skin color/texture | Fair, pale, sometimes described with a light tan; occasionally a pale blue-grey or pastel purple tinge; Tall Whites: chalk-white. Features described as "too symmetrical, too flawless" |
| Hair | Long, straight, blond or white-blond; occasionally platinum or silver |
| Eyes | Blue (most common), occasionally green; almond-shaped; described as striking and expressive; Tall Whites: blue with larger-than-human pupils |
| Facial structure | High forehead; strong bone structure; symmetrical features described as "strikingly attractive"; angular jawline |
| Body | Athletic, proportional, human-like; slightly taller and thinner than average human. Unnaturally fluid movements |
| Clothing | Tight-fitting one-piece suits (white, silver, or light blue); flowing robes in some accounts; Tall Whites: glowing silver suits with force-field capability |
Behavioral Characteristics
- Communication: Telepathic (primary) through "images and concepts rather than words," but some accounts include spoken language. Described as warm, empathetic, and philosophically sophisticated. Reportedly express concern about humanity's future.
- Typical activities: Delivering messages (ecological warnings, spiritual teachings, anti-nuclear warnings); observing; occasionally reported assisting in medical healing
- Emotional display: More emotionally expressive than any Grey type. Described as "paternal, watchful, smiling, affectionate, and youthful." Some accounts describe warmth and even humor.
Charles Hall's Tall Whites — Distinct Subcategory
Charles Hall, a former U.S. Air Force weather observer stationed at Nellis AFB (1965-1967), described a distinct group he called "Tall Whites" in his Millennial Hospitality book series:
- Lifespan: Approximately 10x human lifespan (~800 years)
- Growth stages: At approximately 400 Earth years, they undergo a second growth stage, eventually reaching about 8 feet tall
- Technology: Wore protective suits that allowed levitation; merged force fields could create the illusion of a single glowing animal moving across the desert
- Temperament: Highly territorial and protective of their young; could be dangerous if startled or if their children were threatened; otherwise non-hostile. Family structures observed — children playing, being supervised.
- Base location: Operated from a facility in the desert ranges near Indian Springs, Nevada, allegedly with knowledge of the U.S. military. Hall describes an arrangement: the U.S. provides territory and secrecy; the Tall Whites provide technology access.
- Distinction from "classic" Nordics: Hall's Tall Whites are more alien in behavior — territorial, potentially dangerous, and transactional in their relationship with humans. Classic Nordics are described as benevolent spiritual mentors.
- Institutional memory: Their 800-year lifespan means individuals alive today were alive during the American Revolution. A single Tall White has seen the entirety of the modern era — industrialization, world wars, nuclear weapons, computing, AI — within one lifetime.
Contactee-Era Nordics (1950s) vs. Modern Nordic Reports
| Aspect | 1950s Contactee Era | Modern Reports |
|---|---|---|
| Origin claimed | Venus, Mars, Saturn | Pleiades star cluster, other star systems |
| Key contactees | George Adamski, Howard Menger, Billy Meier | Various anonymous experiencers |
| Message focus | Nuclear weapons danger; Cold War peace | Environmental destruction; consciousness evolution; spiritual ascension |
| Appearance | Human-passing; wore Earth-style clothing or simple jumpsuits | More otherworldly; slight physical differences (skin tinge, eye shape) |
| Relationship to humans | "Space Brothers" — fraternal, friendly | More complex — mentors, observers, sometimes aloof |
| Cultural context | Aligned with 1950s Cold War anxieties | Aligned with environmental and consciousness movements |
| Credibility shift | As Venus/Mars proved uninhabitable, Venusian claims collapsed | Pleiadian claims are unfalsifiable (distant star cluster) |
Why They Look Human — Theories
- Convergent evolution: Humanoid form is optimal for tool-using intelligent life (speculative)
- Common ancestry / panspermia: Shared genetic origin, possibly seeded on Earth and elsewhere
- Screen memory: They don't actually look human; the mind constructs a familiar image to cope (proposed by Jacques Vallee and others)
- Deliberate presentation: Beings choose to appear human to reduce fear and facilitate communication — the Nordic appearance is the diplomatic uniform
- Future humans: Some experiencers report being told Nordics are humans from the future (the "temporal" hypothesis). Their concern about nuclear weapons would be self-preservation — protecting their own history.
- Cultural projection: The Nordic type reflects Western cultural ideals of beauty and authority
Associated Craft Types
- Scout craft: Small, disc or bell-shaped
- Larger cigar-shaped or cylindrical craft
- Hall's Tall Whites: described using a "deep space" craft resembling a large black triangle as well as smaller scout craft
Well-Documented Cases
- George Adamski (1952) — Desert Center, California. Claimed contact with "Orthon," a being from Venus. Described him in a shimmering brown uniform with golden belt. Adamski produced photographs of alleged craft.
- Billy Meier (1975-ongoing) — Switzerland. Claimed ongoing contact with "Semjase" from the Pleiades. Produced photographs, films, and metal samples (all disputed).
- The Friendship Case (1956-1990s) — Italy. Multiple Italian witnesses described ongoing contact with tall, human-looking beings who operated from underground and underwater bases.
- Charles Hall / Tall Whites (1965-1967) — Nellis AFB, Nevada. Two years of alleged regular interaction.
- Travis Walton (1975) — After encountering Greys, Walton described being led to a room with human-looking beings (blonde hair, blue eyes, about 6 feet tall, muscular, wearing tight-fitting blue jumpsuits). One of them — a woman — led Walton through the craft. They did not speak. They put an oxygen-type mask over his face and he lost consciousness. This case is pivotal because it describes two completely different types working together on the same craft, with Greys as workers and Nordics apparently in charge.
- Howard Menger (1950s) — New Jersey. Described beautiful blond beings from Venus.
Geographic Distribution
- Contactee-era Nordics: Predominantly United States, Europe (especially Scandinavia, Italy, UK)
- Hall's Tall Whites: Nevada desert specifically
- Modern Nordic reports: Globally distributed but strongest in Western nations
Temporal Trends
- 1950s-1960s: Dominant reported NHI type (the "contactee era")
- 1970s-1980s: Rapid decline as Greys became dominant
- 1990s-present: Minor but persistent presence; resurgence in online communities via "Pleiadian" channeling claims
- The Grey supplanted the Nordic as the default reported alien type beginning roughly in the 1970s
4. MANTIS / INSECTOID
Also known as: Mantids, Praying Mantis Beings, Insectoids, "The Doctors," Insectalins (Jacobs)
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | 6.0 - 10.0 feet (1.8 - 3.0 m); most commonly reported at 7-8 feet |
| Body structure | Extremely thin, elongated, segmented; exoskeletal appearance; multi-jointed limbs resembling a praying mantis |
| Skin/surface | Segmented exoskeleton; reported as dark green, brown, or black; sometimes with an oily or reflective sheen. Eric Davis describes exoskeletons that "click and scrape" |
| Head | Triangular; large in proportion to body; capable of rotation beyond human range |
| Eyes | Large, black, compound-appearing; positioned on the sides of the triangular head; sometimes described with a subtle internal glow. Deep brown to black, sometimes glowing |
| Mouth | Small mandible-like structures; mandibles instead of mouths; rotating antennae; not observed speaking vocally |
| Arms | Long, angular, multi-jointed; folded in a characteristic "praying" position when at rest; described as capable of fine manipulation despite their alien structure |
| Hands | Two or three digit appendages; described as surprisingly dexterous |
| Clothing | Sometimes described wearing robes or cloaks (purple, dark red, or black) — possibly signifying rank; other times appear unclothed |
The "Priest-Scientist" or "Overseer" Role
Mantis beings are consistently described as occupying the highest tier in multi-type encounter hierarchies:
- They appear to direct both Short Greys and Tall Greys
- They are often positioned at the periphery of abduction scenes — observing, occasionally intervening
- Experiencers describe them as "the one in charge" or "the one making the decisions"
- Their demeanor is described as detached but not hostile — more akin to a scientist observing an experiment or a surgeon overseeing an operation
- Simon Parkes characterizes them as "very proud beings who are capable of exerting a strong commanding presence" and "very technical — they think like a chess computer"
- Described as "master geneticists"
- Reports split between benevolent (calming, comforting) and malevolent (controlling, frightening) characterizations
The big question: Are Mantis beings manufactured (a higher-tier probe with far greater autonomy) or evolved (a biological species that designed and built the Grey probes)? If evolved — they may be the closest thing we've encountered to the actual intelligence behind the phenomenon. An insectoid civilization that developed biological AI (Greys) as its exploration and monitoring platform. The Greys are their robots. The Mantis beings are the roboticists. If manufactured — then something else is behind both, and we haven't encountered the real architects at all. Layers within layers.
Clicking/Buzzing Communication
- Primary communication with humans: telepathic — calm, authoritative, "impossible to ignore." They transmit fully formed ideas or vivid mental images rather than words.
- Communication among themselves: described as a series of high-pitched clicking sounds, buzzing, or trilling
- Eric Davis describes them emitting chittering sounds that resonate "directly in the skull" rather than through normal hearing
- One abductee reported: "The praying mantis turned its head towards the hooded one and made a series of high-pitched clicking sounds. I sensed this was the one in command."
- Simon Parkes independently confirmed a "trilling" sound the beings make "when happy," described as a sound of affection
- The clicking sounds are also reported by DMT experiencers encountering insectoid entities — a notable cross-domain consistency
Relationship to Greys in Hierarchical Encounters
- Tier 1 (top): Mantis beings — strategic oversight, decision-making
- Tier 2: Tall Greys — operational command, direct communication with experiencers
- Tier 3: Short Greys — task execution, physical procedures
This three-tier hierarchy is one of the most consistent patterns across independent abduction accounts worldwide. David Jacobs, after approximately 1,200 hypnotic regressions with 150+ abductees, created the first "scientific typology" of this structure, identifying the hierarchy as: Insectalins (insectoid beings in complete control) > Tall Greys > Short Greys > Hybrids.
Academic Documentation
Dr. John E. Mack, Harvard Medical School: Catalogued remarkably similar mantis entity accounts across hundreds of abduction cases. Mack — a Pulitzer Prize-winning psychiatrist — took the abduction phenomenon seriously enough to risk his career at Harvard studying it. His subjects independently described mantis beings 6-9 feet tall overseeing medical procedures performed by smaller Grey entities.
Dr. David Jacobs, Temple University: Documented mantis beings in supervisory roles across extensive abduction research. The pattern was consistent: Greys perform the physical procedures; mantis beings observe, direct, and occasionally intervene.
Kathleen Marden and Denise Stoner: Found that 79% of abductee-experiencers reported developing new psychic abilities after contact. This suggests the encounters — whatever their nature — produce measurable changes in the experiencers.
The Insectoid Evidence: Key Documented Cases
The following cases represent the strongest documented accounts of insectoid/mantis entity encounters:
1947 — The Creek Encounter: Two boys reading books by a creek. A dome-shaped craft landed nearby. Five giant mantis beings emerged. One rushed up and grabbed the books from the boy's hands. The mantis examined the books with apparent intense interest, then grasped the boy's shoulder and stared into his eyes while clicking. A telepathic message: "Do not look up." The detail that matters: the mantis wanted the data. Not the boys. The books. Written human information. In 1947 — the same year as Roswell, the same year the modern phenomenon began.
1957 — Cincinnati Nurse: A nurse reported to researcher Brian Thompson that she encountered a 3-foot-tall praying mantis entity two days after a V-shaped UFO sighting. Thompson relayed this to researcher Leonard Stringfield, who had two additional cases in his files — separate witnesses, same city, same year, identical descriptions. Three independent witnesses in one city in one year describing the same entity.
1963 — Linda Porter: Taken aboard a craft as a child. Encountered "a praying mantis about eight feet tall in a room that was very odd." Under hypnosis decades later, she described experiments involving human bodies in cylinders and concepts involving the human soul. She produced detailed drawings corroborating her verbal descriptions. Investigated by journalist Linda Moulton Howe. Porter had no exposure to UFO literature and reported details that matched no cultural reference available to her at the time. Porter reported multiple encounters throughout her teens and twenties, only sharing publicly in her mid-forties. The consistency of her descriptions across decades of recall argues against fabrication.
1973 — Pascagoula, Mississippi: Charles Hickson (42) and Calvin Parker (18). Shipyard workers fishing on the Pascagoula River. An egg-shaped craft. Three beings — grey, wrinkled skin, approximately 5 feet tall, with crab-like claws for hands and fused legs ending in elephant-like feet. Distinctly insectoid, not mammalian. The men were paralyzed, floated into the craft, examined. Credibility indicators: police secretly recorded them alone hoping to catch them fabricating — their story held; both passed polygraph examinations; neither ever profited; both maintained testimony until death; additional corroborating witnesses later emerged.
1950s (recalled 1988) — David Huggins: Childhood encounter with mantis entities in rural Georgia. Huggins produced paintings of the beings — paintings that predate the cultural dominance of Grey imagery. His mantis paintings are distinct from any pop culture representation. He had no exposure to UFO literature before his memory recall.
1963-1990s — Benjamin Davidson: Encountered mantis beings near a silvery disc blocking a road in Ohio during the mid-1960s.
1988 — Kim Carlsberg: Awoke on a table in a giant room. The walls were wet. Creatures were staring at her — "bugs like stick bugs with giant glistening eyes." As one approached: a mantis. It touched her. Tubes were inserted. Her skull and chest were opened. Organs were examined. The clinical nature of the procedure — and the mantis's apparent role as the physician directing it — matches the supervisory pattern reported across dozens of independent cases.
1989 — Philip Kinsella:
The Supervisory Pattern
Across all documented cases, the mantis beings occupy the same position: command and oversight. They don't perform the physical examinations. They don't operate the equipment. They observe. They direct. They intervene when something goes wrong or when the situation requires a decision.
This is a command architecture. Greys are the hands. Mantis beings are the brain. The consistency of this hierarchy across independent witnesses — people who have never met, across different decades and countries — is either the most elaborate shared delusion in human history or evidence of an actual operational structure.
Associated Craft Types
- Large disc or oval craft (Mantis beings are almost never reported exiting small craft)
- Interior craft environments described as organic or biological in appearance when Mantis beings are present
- Some reports describe craft interiors with curved, rib-like structures and warm lighting when Mantis beings are in charge (vs. cold, sterile environments associated with Grey-only encounters)
Geographic Distribution
- United States: Phoenix, Arizona notable cluster; widely distributed across rural U.S.
- United Kingdom: Multiple accounts from rural England and Scotland
- Brazil: Amazon region reports
- Canada: Alberta and British Columbia
- Reports exist from multiple continents but at lower frequency than Grey encounters
- Third most commonly reported type after Greys and Nordics; appear across cultures and decades with remarkable consistency
Temporal Trends
- Reports appear throughout the abduction literature from the 1960s onward
- Increased reporting frequency from the 1990s as researchers began distinguishing NHI subtypes
- Notable crossover: DMT and psilocybin experiencers report mantis entities with striking consistency to UFO abduction accounts, raising questions about the nature of the phenomenon (see Appendix A: The Psychedelic Bridge)
5. REPTILIAN
Also known as: Reptiloids, Draconians, Dracos, Lizard People, Saurians
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | 6.0 - 10.0 feet (1.8 - 3.0 m); most commonly 7-8 feet; "royal" caste reported up to 10+ feet. "Draconians" reportedly 14-22 feet, up to 1,800 lbs |
| Skin color/texture | Scaled; greenish-brown (most common), dark green, or brown; tough, leathery texture; sometimes described with an iridescent quality |
| Head | Reptilian cranial structure with pronounced brow ridges; some reports include cranial ridges or horn-like protrusions; elongated with ridges, bony structures, or small horns |
| Eyes | Vertical, slitted pupils (cat-like or snake-like); yellow, green, or reddish; often described as glowing; sometimes with a nictitating membrane; dilate independently |
| Mouth | Wider than human; some reports include visible teeth or fangs |
| Nose | Flat, nostril slits (snake-like) |
| Body | Muscular, powerful build; upright bipedal stance; broad shoulders; with claws and sharp teeth |
| Tail | Reported in some accounts; thick and muscular |
| Hands | Three-fingered claws in some accounts; others describe four or five fingers with sharp nails |
| Odor | Frequently described as musky, sulfurous, or strongly unpleasant. Eric Davis describes "wet earth mixed with something metallic" |
| Clothing | Sometimes described wearing armor or uniform-like garments; other times unclothed |
Caste System Claims
Thomas Castello (alleged former Dulce Base security officer) described a Reptilian caste structure:
| Caste | Description |
|---|---|
| Worker class | Dull green or brown skin; smaller (6-7 ft); perform manual tasks |
| Warrior/Soldier class | Muscular build; pronounced cranial ridges; 7-8 ft; serve as enforcers |
| Royal/Elite class | Albino or white scales; telepathic capabilities; commanding presence; 8-10+ ft; decision-makers |
Alex Collier's claims describe "Draconians" with two main castes:
- Warrior caste: 7-8 feet, feared throughout the galaxy for fighting ability
- Royal line ("Ciakars"): Larger, winged, and described as the ruling elite
Reports more broadly describe a hive-based or caste-based society: "Warriors" as the standard encounter type, "Elders" or royal lineage as the largest specimens, and "Draconians" as the supreme caste, rarely seen.
Phil Schneider's Dulce Claims
Phil Schneider, a geologist who claimed to have worked on secret underground military bases, described:
- In 1979, while helping expand an underground base at Dulce, New Mexico, his team accidentally drilled into an existing alien facility
- A violent confrontation ensued — Schneider claimed to have killed two reptilian entities
- He was struck by a "blue beam weapon" that burned through his chest, destroyed fingers on his left hand, and damaged his knee
- He claimed the facility contained multiple levels, with deeper levels under Reptilian control
- Schneider died in 1996 under circumstances officially ruled suicide but widely disputed in the UFO community
The Herbert Schirmer Case
- Date: December 3, 1967
- Location: Ashland, Nebraska
- Witness: Police Sergeant Herbert Schirmer, age 22
- At approximately 2:30 a.m., Schirmer observed red lights along Highway 63
- Under hypnosis, he recounted being brought aboard a craft by humanoid beings who were not Greys
- Beings were 4'6" to 5' tall, with slanted "catlike" eyes that didn't blink, gray-white skin, long thin heads, flat noses, slit mouths
- Wore silver-gray uniforms, boots, gloves, helmets with small antenna
- Key detail: The beings wore uniforms bearing a winged serpent emblem on the left breast — one of the earliest reported insignia in abduction accounts. At least three other encounters describe the same or similar emblem.
- He suffered a headache, buzzing in his head, and a red welt approximately two inches long on his neck below one ear
- The winged serpent emblem has become a significant data point for researchers tracking Reptilian symbology, suggesting either a shared origin/organization or a recurring archetypal symbol
Additional Notable Cases
- William Tompkins: Asserted Reptilian entities from the Draco system were in contact with Nazi Germany and postwar American military factions
- Barbara Lamb (2006): Psychotherapist encountered a tall reptilian figure in her living room with piercing yellow eyes
- David Huggins (1950s-ongoing): Described reptilian entities alongside insectoid and Grey beings
- The Lacerta Files (1999): Alleged interview with a reptilian being (widely regarded as fiction but culturally significant)
- John Rhodes' research (1990s-ongoing): Compiled extensive database of reptilian encounter reports
- The Superstition Mountains encounters (Arizona): Multiple witnesses over decades reported reptilian beings in cave systems
Behavioral Characteristics
- Communication: Telepathic (primary); some witnesses report guttural vocalizations or hissing
- Typical activities: Described as more aggressive than other NHI types; associated with intimidation, dominance displays, and (in some accounts) feeding on fear or negative emotions; associated with genetic manipulation and mind control rather than standard medical procedures
- Emotional display: Described as cold, calculating, contemptuous toward humans; coldly intelligent, non-emotional, command-driven; innate sense of superiority; some accounts describe anger or predatory behavior
- Relationship to humans: Consistently described as adversarial or exploitative (in stark contrast to Nordics); treat humans and other alien species as subordinates or resources
The Contamination Problem
The testimony is thinner, more sensational, and more culturally contaminated than any other category. The David Icke association (The Biggest Secret, 1998) has made serious researchers avoid the topic entirely. But avoiding a data point because it's culturally embarrassing isn't science — it's social pressure. If Reptilians are real — even partially, even as a misidentified version of something else — they represent the most adversarial element of the ecosystem.
Alternative explanation: The Reptilian accounts might be describing encounters with a military or intelligence operation that uses non-human technology and imagery to intimidate and control witnesses. Human-operated psyops disguised as alien contact.
Associated Craft Types
- Large, dark craft (often described underground or in cave systems rather than atmospheric)
- Some accounts place Reptilians in underground bases rather than arriving via craft
- When associated with craft: large disc or cigar-shaped vessels
Geographic Distribution
- United States: Southwest (especially New Mexico, Arizona); Appalachian region
- United Kingdom: Scattered reports
- South America: Brazil, Peru (often connected to cave/underground traditions)
- Australia: Aboriginal traditions include reptilian creator beings (debated connection)
- Middle East / South Asia: Cultural overlap with Naga traditions (serpent beings)
- Connected to dragon myths across cultures
Temporal Trends
- Ancient: Serpent/dragon beings appear across virtually every mythological tradition worldwide
- Modern reports: Emerge in the 1960s-70s, but become prominent from the 1990s onward
- David Icke's The Biggest Secret (1998) massively amplified public awareness but also conflated UFO reports with political conspiracy theories, complicating serious research
- Post-2010: Reports continue but are often dismissed due to cultural contamination from conspiracy media
6. BLUE BEINGS
Also known as: Blue-Skinned Beings, Blue Avians (Goode's claims, unverified)
Physical Description — Witness Composite
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | Variable; humanoid blue beings range from 5.5 - 7.0 feet |
| Skin color | Light blue to deep blue; smooth; sometimes described with a slight luminescence |
| Eyes | Variable — some reports describe large dark eyes (Grey-like); Sands described "crocodile-like" eyes roughly twice human size, positioned toward the sides of the head |
| Ears | None visible (Sands) |
| Nose | Small, with a slightly rounded tip, distinctly non-human (Sands) |
| Body | Humanoid; proportional; generally slender. Sands described long, slender arms, a stretched physique, thin but not weak-looking, with apparent physical strength |
| Clothing | Varies — Sands described a U.S. military Battle Dress Uniform (BDU); other accounts describe robes or none |
Jason Sands' Detailed Account (Nevada, 1994)
Source: USAF Master Sergeant Jason Sands, first disclosed publicly in James Fox's The Program, later detailed on Joe Rogan Experience #2264 (January 2025).
Location: Near the Nellis Air Force Test Range, Nevada, during a military convoy exercise.
Full account:
- Skin: Pale blue tint, "like someone who is very cold and hypothermic" — not a bright or dark blue, but a bluish undertone beneath otherwise normal-looking skin
- Eyes: Approximately twice human size, positioned toward the sides of the head in an unnatural way. Sands compared making eye contact to "looking into the eyes of a crocodile or suddenly seeing a rattlesnake" — triggering a primal fear response even though the being wasn't threatening him. The crocodile-eye comparison is unique — Greys are almost always described with solid black, featureless eyes.
- Ears: None. Smooth skin where ears should be
- Nose: Small, with a slightly rounded tip, distinctly non-human
- Height: Approximately 5'6" to 5'8" — shorter than Sands by about half a foot
- Build: Long, slender arms. Stretched physique, thin but not weak-looking — displayed apparent physical strength
- Clothing: Wore a pristine U.S. military Battle Dress Uniform (BDU), which seemed completely incongruous
- Movement: Ran awkwardly, "like it was fighting some heavy wind, its arms trailing behind in an uneven stumble"
Communication:
- Spoke aloud in a language Sands compared to "Norwegian or some northern European language"
- Simultaneously transmitted meaning telepathically — Sands perceived the meaning directly in his mind
- Both telepathic AND audible speech — a dual-mode communication almost never reported with other NHI types
- Content: The being's craft was damaged and it needed tritium (the radioactive isotope used in nuclear weapons/energy) to repair it
- Attitude: Polite but sharp. Reportedly called the U.S. military "barbarians and murderers" with cold directness
- When Sands mentioned Area 51/Dreamland, the being expressed a wave of disgust
Why this being breaks frameworks: The BDU detail implies either (a) it took the clothing from somewhere, (b) it was manufactured wearing it as camouflage, or (c) it had prior interaction with military personnel and acquired the uniform through exchange. This being had a broken ship. It needed a specific material to fix it. It was wearing stolen or acquired human clothing. It spoke audibly in something resembling a real human language. And it had strong opinions about the U.S. military's treatment of its kind. That's not a tool or a temporary body — that's a person with a ship that breaks down, who needs to scrounge materials to fix it, who has emotional reactions to how it's been treated.
How this differs from a Grey: Shares no-ears and large-eyes traits with Greys, but diverges significantly: blue-tinted skin (not grey), a visible nose, proportional humanoid body (not the oversized-head-tiny-body of Greys), wore human clothing, spoke audibly in addition to telepathy, and displayed emotional opinions.
Verification status: Sands' Air Force employment has been confirmed; his involvement with any UFO recovery program has not been independently verified.
Other Blue-Skinned Reports
Blue-skinned beings are among the less commonly reported NHI types. Reports include:
- Lily Nova (Missouri): Claimed regular contact with a girl with "light blue skin, no hair, very beautiful, wearing a tight gray suit" with teammates behind her
- Nordic-type beings with a pale blue-grey or pastel purple skin tinge (blurring the line between Nordic and Blue Being categories)
- Accounts from meditation and out-of-body experiences describing luminous blue humanoids
- Some FREE survey respondents described blue-skinned beings in non-physical or "interdimensional" encounter contexts
- Historical Hindu traditions describe blue-skinned divine beings (Vishnu, Krishna) — debated connection
The "Blue Avians" Claims (Corey Goode)
NOTE: These claims are unverified and highly controversial, even within the UFO research community.
- Corey Goode claims recruitment into a "Secret Space Program" (SSP) at age 6 under a "20 and Back" program
- Describes the "Blue Avians" as tall, humanoid beings with blue feathers, beaks, and large expressive eyes
- Part of the "Sphere Being Alliance" — alleged benevolent extraterrestrial group
- Goode's primary contact: a being named "Ra-Tear-Eir"
- Credibility issues: No verifiable evidence; Goode has been involved in legal disputes with the Gaia streaming platform; many researchers in the field explicitly distance themselves from these claims
- The Blue Avians as described by Goode do not match any other reported NHI type and have no independent corroboration from other experiencers
Connection to Nordic-Type or Distinct Category?
The blue being category is ambiguous:
- Some blue-skinned reports may be variants of Nordic encounters (pale blue tinge on otherwise Nordic features)
- Sands' description (no ears, crocodile eyes, blue skin) is distinctly non-Nordic
- The category may contain multiple unrelated types grouped by skin color alone
- Recommendation: Treat as a distinct category when the description includes non-human features (Sands-type). Classify as Nordic-variant when the being is otherwise human-appearing with only a blue skin tinge.
Geographic Distribution
- Limited data due to low report frequency
- Sands' encounter: Nevada
- Other scattered reports: No clear geographic pattern
Temporal Trends
- No clear temporal pattern
- Goode's Blue Avian claims emerged circa 2015 via the Gaia platform
- Sands' account became public circa 2024-2025
7. ENERGY BEINGS / LIGHT BEINGS
Also known as: Orbs, Luminous Entities, Beings of Light, Light Forms
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Form | Non-corporeal; appearing as glowing light, luminous mist, orbs, columns of light, or vaguely humanoid light shapes |
| Color | White (most common), golden, blue, multicolored; occasionally described as shifting or pulsing colors |
| Size | Highly variable — from small orbs (inches) to room-filling presences to vaguely humanoid shapes of 6-8 feet |
| Edges | Indistinct, soft, glowing; not sharply defined |
| Physicality | No physical body; sometimes reported to pass through walls or solid objects |
Behavioral Characteristics
- Communication: Telepathic; often described as the most emotionally rich and complex communication of any NHI type — flooding the experiencer with feelings of love, peace, knowledge, or cosmic perspective
- Typical activities: Communication, teaching, healing, comfort; rarely (if ever) associated with the invasive procedures reported with Greys
- Emotional display: Overwhelmingly described as radiating love, compassion, wisdom, or benevolence
- Physical interaction: Generally none — these beings are not associated with physical examinations or craft interiors
Why They Are the Most Common Type in FREE Data
The FREE Foundation survey (N=3,256+) found that non-physical encounters constituted the majority of reported NHI contact:
- Energy Beings: 55% of respondents
- Human-Looking Beings: 54% of respondents
Energy/Light beings dominate because:
- The survey included a broad definition of "contact" — not limited to physical abduction
- Many experiencers describe contact during meditation, near-death experiences, out-of-body states, or spontaneous altered consciousness
- Approximately 70% of FREE respondents described their contact experience as positive, and energy/light being encounters skew overwhelmingly positive
- These encounters are more likely to be voluntarily reported (vs. abduction experiences, which carry stigma and trauma)
- The experiencer population self-selects: people who have had positive, spiritual contact are more motivated to participate in surveys
The Grey dominance in the abduction literature may be an artifact of Budd Hopkins' and David Jacobs' focus — their cases were primarily hypnotic regression cases that selected for the abduction narrative. The FREE data, surveying a broader experiencer population without hypnosis, found a much more diverse picture. Of 600 FREE respondents who had "abductions," only 32% framed them in traditional abduction terms — the rest described something closer to voluntary contact.
Connection to NDE-Type Experiences
- The overlap between NDE "beings of light" and UFO-related energy beings is substantial
- NDE experiencers frequently describe encountering a luminous being or presence that communicates telepathically, conveys unconditional love, and imparts knowledge — identical to many UFO-related light being reports
- This crossover raises fundamental questions: Are these the same phenomenon accessed through different triggers (trauma vs. craft encounter vs. meditation)?
- Some researchers (including those at FREE) argue this overlap suggests a unified consciousness phenomenon rather than separate "alien" and "spiritual" categories
Orb Encounters with Perceived Intelligence/Communication
- Orbs are the most commonly reported UAP form
- Many orb witnesses report a sense of intelligence, intention, or communication from the orb
- Controlled experiments: One researcher recorded over 75% accuracy in directing orb placement over 400 trials by mentally requesting orbs to appear in specific photograph locations
- Some orb encounters precede or follow more structured NHI contact (orbs as "scouts" or "precursors")
- Plasma physics: Scientists have created plasma clouds resembling glowing orbs using salt water, electrodes, and high voltage — offering a potential mundane explanation for some reports, though not for those involving perceived communication
Associated Craft Types
- Often not associated with craft at all
- When associated with craft: orbs or spheres of light that move with apparent intelligence
- Sometimes described entering or exiting larger craft
Geographic Distribution
- Global; no geographic clustering
- Reported across all cultures, religions, and demographic groups
- The most universally distributed NHI type
Temporal Trends
- Reports span all of recorded history (and likely pre-history)
- Historically interpreted through religious/spiritual frameworks (angels, divine light, etc.)
- Modern reinterpretation through UFO/NHI lens beginning in the late 20th century
- Increasing report frequency correlating with the growth of meditation and consciousness exploration communities
8. SHADOW BEINGS
Also known as: Shadow People, Shadow Figures, Dark Entities
Physical Description
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Form | Dark, shadowy, humanoid silhouette; two-dimensional or three-dimensional; lacking discernible features in most accounts. "Darker than darkness" — solid black |
| Color | Solid black or very dark; described as "darker than the surrounding darkness" |
| Height | Variable; typically human-sized (5.5 - 7.0 feet); the Hat Man is often described as notably tall (6.5+ feet) |
| Eyes | Sometimes described as red or glowing; other times no visible features at all |
| Edges | Sometimes sharply defined (solid shadow); other times described as wispy, smoky, or fluid at the edges |
| Movement | Gliding, fluid; can move extremely fast; described as vanishing into walls, corners, or peripheral vision |
The "Hat Man" Archetype
The Hat Man is the most specific and widely reported shadow being variant:
- Described as a tall, solid black silhouette wearing a fedora, wide-brimmed hat, or top hat
- Sometimes described wearing a trench coat or cloak
- Typically observed during sleep paralysis, but also reported by fully awake witnesses
- Exudes an aura of extreme malevolence, dread, or terror
- Sometimes described with glowing red eyes
- Cross-cultural consistency: reported across the Americas, Europe, and elsewhere with remarkably uniform descriptions
- Connection to diphenhydramine (Benadryl): The Hat Man is commonly reported during high-dose diphenhydramine abuse, suggesting a pharmacological component to at least some reports
Connection to Sleep Paralysis
- Around 20% of people experience sleep paralysis at least occasionally
- Of those, up to 75% experience hallucinations during episodes
- Sleep paralysis hallucinations frequently involve a dark, shadowy figure approaching or pressing on the chest — directly matching shadow being descriptions
- The neurological explanation: the brain, caught between sleep and wakefulness, projects a threatening shape to match the sensation of terror and paralysis
- However: some shadow being encounters occur to fully awake, ambulatory witnesses, which sleep paralysis cannot explain
Behavioral Characteristics
- Communication: Rarely communicative; when communication is reported, it is telepathic and typically threatening, warning, or simply conveying dread
- Typical activities: Watching, lurking, approaching; rarely described interacting physically; sometimes described feeding on fear
- Emotional display: Overwhelmingly described as malevolent, predatory, or indifferent — the opposite of light beings
- Intent: Debated — some researchers describe them as merely curious observers; the majority of experiencers describe them as threatening
Relationship to Abduction Phenomena
- Some abductees report shadow being encounters preceding or following abduction events
- Rosemary Ellen Guiley concluded that shadow people are a "shape-shifted form" of Djinn, and found that people who see shadow beings also frequently report alien abductions, poltergeist activity, and other paranormal phenomena — suggesting a common source
- Some researchers consider shadow beings a pre-abduction surveillance phenomenon
- The interdimensional hypothesis: shadow beings may be entities existing at the edge of human perception, partially visible when dimensional boundaries thin
Connection to Alien Encounters (Cross-Cultural)
- Many abductees report shadowy beings before, during, or after abduction experiences
- Some appear near UFO sightings — "shadowy, elongated figures with fluid movements"
- Cross-cultural: appear in Western accounts, Islamic tradition (Djinn), and various other cultures
Theories
- Neurological: Sleep paralysis hallucinations and hypnagogic/hypnopompic states
- Extraterrestrial: NHI using cloaking technology or psychic projection to observe humans
- Interdimensional: Beings from parallel dimensions partially manifesting in ours
- Djinn theory (Guiley): Shape-shifting entities from Islamic and pre-Islamic traditions
- Psychic residue / haunting: Imprints of consciousness rather than living beings
- Pharmacological: Drug-induced (especially anticholinergics like diphenhydramine)
Geographic Distribution
- Global; reported across all cultures
- Coast to Coast AM radio program (Art Bell/George Noory era) significantly amplified awareness and reporting in North America
Temporal Trends
- Ancient: "Night visitors" and dark presences appear in folklore worldwide (the "Old Hag" tradition, incubus/succubus, Djinn)
- Modern: Reports spiked after Coast to Coast AM popularized the topic in the early 2000s
- Internet-era: Online communities have created large databases of shadow being reports, potentially increasing both genuine reporting and social contagion
9. ORGANIC / ANOMALOUS
These are NHI types that do not fit cleanly into the standard categories. They tend to appear in singular, localized events and resist classification. Their uniqueness may indicate different origins, different technologies, or different manifestation methods than the "standard" types.
Varginha Creature (Brazil, 1996)
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | Approximately 5 feet (1.5-1.6 m) |
| Skin | Dark brown; oily, glistening — completely hairless |
| Head | Disproportionately large with a ridged skull. Three rounded protuberances (bumps/horns) on the top of the head — the most distinctive feature |
| Eyes | Large, solid red without pupils — pure red. Not the large dark eyes of a Grey |
| Mouth | A slit, barely visible |
| Body | Very thin, with thin limbs |
| Feet | V-shaped (cloven or split) |
| Odor | Overpowering ammonia or sulfur-like smell wherever the creatures were seen |
Key details:
- January 20, 1996, in Varginha, Minas Gerais, Brazil
- Primary witnesses: Three young women — sisters Liliane (16) and Valquiria Silva (14), and Katia Xavier (22) — saw the creature at eight feet away
- Multiple additional witnesses including military personnel and medical staff
- The creature appeared vulnerable, possibly injured or disoriented — crouching, cowering, "wobbly or unsteady as if hurt or sick"
- Reportedly capable of inducing "psychic dread" in witnesses
- Multiple creatures sighted over several days
- Animals at a local zoo died mysteriously in the months following
Medical testimony:
- Dr. Italo Venturelli, former head of neurosurgery at the local hospital, publicly stated he had a four-minute encounter with a living, non-human being: "The truth is, I saw the being. It was not a being from our planet."
- Brazilian military was allegedly involved in capturing at least one creature
- Military policeman Marco Eli Cherese allegedly handled one bare-handed and died 23 days later. His family says he was exposed to an alien pathogen — a deadly bacteria from the creature. The military says pre-existing cyst and hospital infection.
- Documented in James Fox's film Moment of Contact (2022)
How this differs from a Grey: Almost entirely. Brown oily skin instead of smooth grey. Red eyes instead of black. Three head protuberances instead of a smooth dome. V-shaped feet instead of small rounded feet. Ammonia smell (Greys are not typically associated with strong odor). This looks like an entirely different species. Some ufological sources associate it with the "Akart" species type.
Official explanation: The Brazilian military concluded the witnesses saw a mentally unstable local resident nicknamed "Mudinho." Most investigators and witnesses reject this explanation.
Flatwoods Monster (West Virginia, 1952)
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | Approximately 10 feet (3 m) |
| Face | Round, blood-red, glowing; shaped like the ace of spades with a green face that glowed |
| Head covering | Large, pointed "hood" or "ace of spades" shaped cowl around the face |
| Eyes | Non-human; emitted greenish-orange light |
| Body | Dark black or green; indistinct below the "shoulders"; sometimes described as greenish, with folds interpreted as a metallic "dress" or skirt |
| Hands | Small, claw-like |
| Movement | Glided rather than walked — hissed when it moved toward witnesses |
| Other | Clothing-like folds; emitted a pungent mist that caused nausea in witnesses. Strong metallic or acrid odor. |
Key details:
- September 12, 1952, in Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia
- Appeared after a bright light/meteor was seen crossing the sky and apparently landing on a hillside
- A group including two boys, their mother, and a National Guardsman went to investigate
- Investigation found a pulsing red light and the creature, which hissed and glided toward them
- Witnesses reported nausea, vomiting, and convulsions afterward
- Some researchers have proposed it was a barn owl on a tree branch, misidentified in the dark by frightened witnesses
- The creature's description does not match any standard NHI type — possibly a being in some kind of environmental suit or exoframe
Kelly-Hopkinsville Beings (Kentucky, 1955)
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | Approximately 2 - 4 feet (0.6 - 1.2 m) |
| Skin | Silver or metallic; glowing; described as "like a five-gallon gasoline can with a head on top" |
| Head | Oversized relative to body; large, round |
| Eyes | Huge, glowing yellow (not the large black of Greys) |
| Ears | Large, pointed, bat-like (a unique detail not found in Grey reports) |
| Hands | Human-like but with bird-like talons/claws |
| Body | Spindly; thin legs; silver-grey torso with eerie shimmer |
| Movement | Floating or swaying rather than walking; appeared to "bounce back" when shot |
| Other | Possibly antenna-like protrusions |
Key details:
- August 21, 1955, near Kelly and Hopkinsville, Kentucky
- The Sutton family farm was besieged for hours after Billy Ray Taylor saw a bright object land nearby
- Multiple creatures appeared at windows, on the roof, in trees
- The family fired repeatedly at the creatures with shotguns and rifles — bullets seemed to make a metallic clang with no apparent effect. The beings would float away when shot and return.
- Multiple witnesses (11 people in the house) provided consistent testimony
- Police who responded found evidence of gunfire but no creature remains
- Some researchers have proposed great horned owls as the explanation
- The beings do not match the classic Grey template — the large ears, metallic skin, glowing yellow eyes, and resistance to gunfire are unique features
- Active, persistent, almost playful behavior (Greys are clinical and controlled). These beings acted more like aggressive creatures than scientists.
- This case is credited with originating the term "Little Green Men" in popular culture (despite the beings being described as silver, not green)
Pascagoula Beings (Mississippi, 1973)
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | Approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) |
| Skin | Pale grey; wrinkled; "elephantine" texture |
| Head | Bullet-shaped, connected directly to shoulders; no discernible neck |
| Eyes | No visible eyes (slits or none) |
| Mouth | Small slit |
| Ears | Three "carrot-like" conical growths — one where the nose would be, two where ears would be |
| Arms | Longer than legs; ended in claw-like or mitten-shaped pincer hands with fused fingers (two or three); crab-like claws |
| Legs | Appeared fused into a single limb (unipedal); ending in round, elephant-like feet |
| Movement | Completely mechanical/robotic. Had legs but did not use them — they floated |
Key details:
- October 11, 1973; Pascagoula, Mississippi
- Charles Hickson (42) and Calvin Parker (18/19) were fishing when a football-shaped/egg-shaped, luminous craft appeared
- Three entities emerged and "floated" toward them
- Both men were paralyzed and taken aboard the craft
- Examined by a "free-floating eye-like device"
- Credibility indicators: A secretly recorded conversation between the two men (when police left the room hoping to catch them fabricating) showed them in genuine distress — their story held under unobserved conditions. Both passed polygraph examinations administered by Mississippi State University. Neither man ever profited from the account. Both maintained their testimony until death. Additional corroborating witnesses later emerged.
- The beings' description is unique — the fused legs, wrinkled skin, and robotic movement do not match any standard NHI type. Many researchers have suggested they were robotic or biomechanical constructs. Distinctly insectoid, not mammalian.
The Mothman (Point Pleasant, West Virginia, 1966-1967)
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Height | 6.5-7 feet tall |
| Wings | Wingspan of nearly 10 feet, white or dark, did NOT flap — the creature glided |
| Eyes | Bright red, glowing, appeared to be on its chest (because no distinct head was visible) |
| Body | Muscular, dark, described as a "slender, muscular man" by one witness |
| Head | No clearly distinct separate head |
| Speed | Reportedly flew up to 100 mph |
| Sound | Loud squeaking noises like a mouse |
The UFO connection: John Keel investigated extensively and found that Mothman witnesses also reported UFO sightings in the same area, visits from Men in Black, strange phone calls, precognitions and premonitions. The phenomena preceded the Silver Bridge collapse (December 15, 1967), which killed 46 people.
Keel's "Ultraterrestrial" theory: Rather than calling these things extraterrestrial, Keel proposed "ultraterrestrials" — non-human intelligences that coexist with Earth, capable of shapeshifting, projecting illusions, and manipulating human perception. In this framework, Mothman, UFOs, Men in Black, and ghost-like phenomena are all manifestations of the same underlying intelligence.
How it fits: The Mothman doesn't fit the extraterrestrial framework at all. No craft association (directly). No medical examination. No communication. It behaves more like a portent or herald. It represents a category that is neither alien-in-a-ship nor folklore-creature, but something in between.
The Colares Beings (Brazil, 1977) — Operation Prato
Captain Hollanda's entity encounter: Captain Uyrange Hollanda Lima, who commanded Operation Prato, described in a 1997 interview a being approximately 1.5 meters tall in a metallic spacesuit. It spoke in perfect Portuguese with a metallic quality. It embraced Hollanda from behind and said: "Take it easy. We are not going to harm you." Hollanda claimed to receive an implant in his arm — visible but undetectable by X-rays.
Tragic aftermath: Three months after breaking his silence, Hollanda was found dead at home, officially by suicide (bathroom robe rope). Friends and family said he showed no signs of despair and had been excited about sharing his experiences.
Small Humanoids / Duendes (Latin America)
- Less than 2 feet tall
- Wrinkled faces, long beards (in some traditions); pointed elf-like ears; piercing red eyes that glow at night (Mexican tradition); no thumbs (some descriptions); some covered in long hair; in Guatemala: wear large hats and red clothing
- Notable modern sighting: Argentina Gnome (Guemes, 2008) — widely circulated video showing a small humanoid walking with a strange sideways gait
- The global prevalence of "little people" in folklore — fairies in Europe, duendes in Latin America, Menehune in Hawaii, chaneque in Mexico — combined with reports of small entities in UFO encounters, has led some researchers (notably Jacques Vallee) to propose these are all manifestations of the same phenomenon across different cultural frameworks
Other Anomalous One-Off Types
- Hopkinsville-adjacent "Goblin" types: Small, mischievous beings reported in various global folkloric traditions that occasionally intersect with UFO events
- The Enfield Horror (1973) — Illinois. Short, grey, three-legged being with glowing red eyes
- The Dover Demon (1977) — Massachusetts. Large head, glowing orange eyes, spindly body, no facial features except eyes. Seen by multiple witnesses over two days.
- The Zanfretta Beings (1978) — Genoa, Italy. Security guard Pier Fortunato Zanfretta described 10-foot tall beings with green skin, pointed heads, and yellow triangular eyes.
Beings with Head Protuberances/Horns — Cross-Reference
The Varginha creature's three head protuberances are its most distinctive feature. How common is this?
- Varginha (1996): Three rounded bumps/horns on top of skull, consistently reported by all witnesses
- Pascagoula (1973): Three "carrot-like" conical growths where nose and ears would be (different placement — face rather than skull top)
- Some Reptilian reports: Describe ridges, bony structures, or small horns on elongated heads
- Kelly-Hopkinsville (1955): Large pointed ears could be interpreted as protuberances
Head protuberances are uncommon but not unique to Varginha. They do not correspond to any of the "standard" four types in Davis's framework.
Why These May Represent Different "Specs" or Origins
Several hypotheses attempt to explain the diversity of anomalous types:
- Multiple origin hypothesis: These beings come from different civilizations with different evolutionary histories, explaining the radical morphological differences
- Different manifestation parameters: The same underlying phenomenon materializes differently depending on local conditions (consciousness, electromagnetic environment, cultural context)
- Temporal variation: Beings from different time periods or timelines manifest with different physical characteristics
- Biological vs. technological: Some may be biological organisms; others may be avatars, drones, or projections — accounting for the "robotic" quality of Pascagoula beings vs. the apparent biological nature of the Varginha creature
- Specimen variation: Just as Earth has enormous biodiversity, a galaxy-spanning civilization (or multiple civilizations) would encompass enormous morphological variation
10. HUMANOID (UNSPECIFIED)
Also known as: Human-looking beings, unidentified humanoids, generic humanoids
Definition
A catch-all category for beings described as broadly humanoid in shape — bipedal, two arms, one head — but without enough specific detail to classify into another category. This is the most common classification in historical UFO reports where witnesses observed beings at a distance or under poor conditions.
Distinguishing from Nordic When Description Is Vague
| If the witness describes... | Classify as... |
|---|---|
| Tall, blond, blue-eyed, beautiful | Nordic |
| Tall, human-looking, light skin, no further detail | Humanoid (Unspecified) — could be Nordic |
| Human-looking but "something was off" | Humanoid (Unspecified) |
| Wearing a uniform, human appearance, stiff behavior | Humanoid (Unspecified) or Men in Black |
| Human-looking but with slightly non-human features (larger eyes, elongated face) | Humanoid (Unspecified) — could be Nordic variant or hybrid |
Rule of thumb: Only classify as Nordic when the witness specifically mentions blond/light hair, blue/light eyes, and striking attractiveness. Otherwise, Humanoid (Unspecified) is the safer classification.
The "Men in Black" as a Humanoid Subcategory
Men in Black (MIB) represent a distinct subcategory of humanoid encounters with consistent features:
Physical Description:
- Tall; dark suits (always black); pale or olive complexion
- Sometimes described with Asian or ambiguous ethnic features
- Unusual characteristics: dead-white skin, missing eyebrows or eyelashes, bright red lipstick, robotic movements
- Eyes sometimes described as strange or glowing
Behavioral Characteristics:
- Travel in groups of 1-3
- Visit UFO witnesses shortly after their sighting
- Claim to represent government agencies (which prove to be fictitious)
- Display uncanny knowledge of the witness's experience and personal details
- Demand silence; confiscate physical evidence
- Speak in formal, stilted, or oddly phrased language
- Sometimes appear unfamiliar with basic human objects or customs (struggling with pens, confused by common foods)
Key Cases:
- Harold Dahl (1947) — Maury Island, Washington. First reported MIB encounter.
- Albert K. Bender (1953) — Bridgeport, Connecticut. Three men in dark suits warned him to stop UFO investigations. Foundational MIB case.
- Dr. Herbert Hopkins (1976) — Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Visited by a bald man with dead-white skin and red lipstick who demanded destruction of UFO research materials, then appeared to "power down" and leave.
Theories:
- Government agents (genuine intelligence operatives discouraging witnesses)
- Alien beings disguised as humans (imperfect mimicry explaining the "uncanny valley" quality)
- Interdimensional beings manifesting in semi-human form
- Psychological phenomenon (projection of authority-fear after a traumatic sighting)
Associated Craft Types
- Various; no specific association
- MIBs are typically associated with black Cadillacs or sedans rather than craft
Geographic Distribution
- Global for Humanoid (Unspecified)
- MIB reports concentrate heavily in the United States, with some UK and European accounts
Temporal Trends
- Humanoid (Unspecified) is the dominant historical category — most reports before the 1960s describe "human-looking" or vaguely humanoid beings without the specificity of later accounts
- MIB reports peak in the 1950s-1970s and decline thereafter
- The category shrinks over time as researchers develop more specific typologies
Cross-Cutting Analysis
Eric Davis's Four-Type Framework (Congressional Briefing, May 2024)
Dr. Eric Davis, a physicist who consulted for the Pentagon on classified projects for decades, told Congress there are four NHI types:
- Greys — small beings, smooth gray skin, oversized solid black eyes, clinical detachment, consistent across thousands of global reports
- Nordics — tall, pale, resembling Scandinavians, features "too symmetrical, too flawless," communicate telepathically through images and concepts
- Insectoids — multiple limbs bending unnaturally, exoskeletons, mandibles, rotating antennae, chittering sounds resonating directly in the skull, examine humans like specimens
- Reptilians — scaled snake-like skin, vertical pupils that dilate independently, musky organic odor, connected to dragon myths across cultures
Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison confirmed hearing these classifications in private discussions. Davis was not speaking under oath but had decades of top-secret clearances. Davis presented this to Congress as established knowledge within the programs he'd been briefed on. Four types. Distinct. Categorized. Known.
Abduction Researchers' Taxonomies
Three major researchers approached the same data and reached wildly different conclusions:
Budd Hopkins (the artist): Saw the abduction phenomenon as centered on a "grand creative project" of procreation. Focused primarily on Greys and their reproductive program. Documented hybrid children shown to abductees. He saw creation.
David Jacobs (the historian): Most systematic taxonomist. Conducted ~1,200 hypnotic regressions with 150+ abductees. Created the first "scientific typology." Identified the hierarchy: Insectalins > Tall Greys > Short Greys > Hybrids. His hybrid classification: early-stage hybrids (more alien), human-stage hybrids (almost pass), and "hubrids" (indistinguishable from humans, sent to integrate into society). His thesis in The Threat: the hybrid program aims to create beings that will replace humans as Earth's dominant species. He saw colonization.
John Mack (the psychiatrist): Most familiar with "little grays" and also documented reptilian entities and dwarves. Less interested in categorizing types and more focused on what the experience meant to witnesses. Viewed encounters as potentially transformative/spiritual rather than purely physical. He saw transformation.
Same data, wildly different interpretations — which itself tells us something about how our frameworks shape what we see.
Which Types Are NEVER Reported Together?
Based on the available literature, strict "never" claims are difficult to make, but notable patterns include:
- Nordics and Reptilians are very rarely reported in the same encounter. When both appear in an experiencer's account, they are typically described in separate events, often in oppositional roles (Nordic as protector, Reptilian as threat).
- Shadow Beings and Mantis Beings have virtually no co-occurrence in the same event. They appear to belong to different phenomenological categories entirely.
- Energy/Light Beings and Reptilians are almost never reported together — their associated emotional registers (profound love vs. predatory menace) are diametrically opposed.
- Men in Black and any NHI type are not reported simultaneously — MIBs appear after an NHI encounter, never during.
- Anomalous/One-off types (Flatwoods, Kelly-Hopkinsville, Pascagoula) are by definition singular — they don't co-occur with standard types.
Which Types Are ALWAYS (or Commonly) Reported Together?
- Short Greys + Tall Greys: The most consistently co-occurring pair. When Tall Greys appear, Short Greys are almost always present.
- Short Greys + Mantis Beings: The second most common pairing, with Mantis beings overseeing Grey-performed procedures.
- Short Greys + Tall Greys + Mantis Beings: The classic three-tier hierarchy. When all three appear, Mantis directs, Tall Grey commands, Short Greys execute.
- Greys + Nordics: Reported together in some abduction accounts, with Nordics appearing to observe or intervene. Travis Walton's case includes both.
- Orbs/Light phenomena + any physical NHI type: Orbs or light phenomena frequently precede or follow physical NHI encounters, acting as precursors or surveillance.
Which Types Appear Manufactured/Artificial vs. Biological?
| Likely Manufactured/Artificial | Likely Biological | Ambiguous |
|---|---|---|
| Short Greys (proposed biorobots/drones) | Tall Greys | Nordics (real beings? Screen memories? Future humans?) |
| MIBs (imperfect mimics, possibly technological) | Mantis Beings | Blue Beings |
| Pascagoula Beings (robotic movement, fused limbs) | Reptilians | Energy/Light Beings (non-physical entirely) |
| Varginha Creature (appeared injured, biological distress) | Shadow Beings |
What Types Appear in What Contexts?
| Being Type | Typical Context | Behavior | Communication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short Greys | Abductions, medical exams | Robotic, clinical | Telepathic (limited) |
| Tall Greys | Abductions (supervisory) | Authoritative, calmer | Telepathic (complex) |
| Nordics | Contactee encounters, spiritual messages | Benevolent, philosophical | Telepathic (images/concepts) |
| Reptilians | Underground bases, aggressive encounters | Dominant, threatening | Telepathic or verbal |
| Insectoids/Mantis | Abductions (overseer role) | Cold authority, detached | Telepathic (commanding) |
| Pascagoula-type | Abduction | Robotic/mechanical | None apparent |
| Kelly-Hopkinsville | Siege/harassment | Aggressive, persistent | None apparent |
| Varginha-type | Crash retrieval | Vulnerable, injured | Psychic dread |
| Ariel School-type | Landing/contact | Non-threatening, purposeful | Telepathic (warnings) |
| Shadow beings | Bedroom/sleep paralysis | Observational, ominous | None apparent |
Geographic Patterns
- United States: Dominated by Grey encounters (both tall and short)
- South America (Brazil): More unique/anomalous types (Varginha creature, Colares beings)
- Europe (1950s): Nordic contactee encounters dominated
- Africa (Ariel School): Grey-adjacent beings with distinctive features
- China: Radically different data — beings speak Mandarin and give educational lectures
- Global: Mantis beings and Reptilians appear across all regions
The "Costume" Hypothesis — All Types as Materializations of the Same Consciousness
Jacques Vallee and other researchers in the "interdimensional" school propose:
- The phenomenon is a single intelligence (or type of intelligence) that presents itself differently depending on cultural context
- In medieval Europe, the same phenomenon appeared as faeries, elves, and goblins
- In the 1950s Cold War, it appeared as Nordic "Space Brothers" with anti-nuclear messages
- In the post-Close Encounters era, it appears as Greys performing medical procedures
- The form is a "costume" worn by something fundamentally beyond human comprehension
- Supporting evidence: The progression of NHI forms tracks cultural shifts rather than representing consistent external visitors. The messages always mirror contemporary anxieties (nuclear war, environmental collapse, consciousness).
- Counter-evidence: The three-tier Grey/Mantis hierarchy is reported consistently across cultures and decades, which would be unusual for a purely culturally-constructed phenomenon.
The "Multiple Civilizations" Hypothesis — Distinct Origins for Distinct Types
The alternative interpretation:
- Each distinct NHI type represents a genuinely different species, civilization, or origin
- Greys: Zeta Reticuli or another star system; possibly bioengineered by a third party
- Nordics: Pleiades or parallel Earth; possibly future humans
- Mantis: Unknown origin; possibly interdimensional rather than extraterrestrial
- Reptilians: Possibly Earth-native (evolved from a dinosaurian ancestor) or Alpha Draconis
- Energy Beings: Possibly post-biological — a civilization that has transcended physical form
- Shadow Beings: Possibly interdimensional entities existing at the boundary of human perception
Supporting evidence:
- The morphological diversity of reported types is enormous — difficult to explain as costumes of a single intelligence
- Different types exhibit consistently different behavioral profiles, technologies, and communication styles
- The hierarchical relationships between types (Mantis > Grey) suggest genuine inter-species dynamics
- FREE data: experiencers report an average of 3 different NHI types, suggesting real diversity
Counter-evidence:
- The sheer number of reported types (33+ in the Exo Studies database, hundreds in FREE "Other" responses) strains the "each is a separate civilization" model
- Some types blur into each other (Nordic/Blue Being, Short Grey/Tall Grey), suggesting a continuum rather than discrete categories
- The phenomenon's connection to consciousness, altered states, and NDEs suggests something more complex than physical visitors from different planets

The Diversity Problem
Why Multi-Type Evidence Breaks the Single-Factory Model
A clean framework — one intelligence, one program, biological drone probes running an autonomous monitoring system — is elegant. It explains the standardized Grey appearance, the robotic behavior, the technology seeding. But it doesn't explain the Tall Whites. It doesn't explain the Nordics. It doesn't explain the Mantis beings. It doesn't explain the Reptilians. And it doesn't explain why witness testimony across decades and cultures describes radically different types of entities with radically different behaviors, apparent motivations, and levels of autonomy.
If the Greys are biological drones, the other reported entities are not. They show individuality, culture, emotion, longevity, reproduction, and apparent diplomatic capability. They're not manufactured platforms. They're something else.
What the FREE Foundation Data Actually Shows
The FREE Foundation — the largest systematic survey of contact experiencers (3,256 participants, 554 questions, no hypnotic regression) — found results that challenge standard assumptions:
- Energy Beings: 55% of respondents
- Human-Looking Beings: 54% of respondents
- Not Greys. The Grey dominance in the literature may be an artifact of Budd Hopkins' and David Jacobs' focus — their cases were primarily hypnotic regression cases that selected for the abduction narrative, which is Grey-centric.
- 75% of FREE respondents viewed their contact as positive. Only 15% as negative.
- Of 600 who had "abductions," only 32% framed them in traditional abduction terms. The rest described something closer to voluntary contact.
- FREE experiencers report an average of 3 different NHI types — suggesting real diversity in individual experiencer encounters.
This contradicts the Hopkins/Jacobs paradigm almost entirely. The Grey-as-abductor model may represent a subset — possibly a militarized or traumatic subset — of a much larger and more varied contact phenomenon.
Three Models for the Diversity
Model 1: One Factory, Multiple Product Lines
One system builds everything — Greys, Nordics, Insectoids, Reptilians, the Varginha creature, Sands' blue alien — the way a manufacturer produces different products for different markets. Each body type is a different spec for a different mission. The Greys are the standard worker model. The Nordics are the diplomacy model. The Mantis beings are the overseer model. The Varginha creature was an environmental sampling model.
What supports this: The "built to spec" principle. If you can build any body to any specification, why limit yourself to one design? Different missions require different tools.
What undermines this: Jason Sands' blue alien had a broken ship and needed tritium. That's not how a purpose-built tool behaves. A tool doesn't scrounge materials from the local population. A tool doesn't wear stolen clothing. A tool doesn't have strong emotional opinions about how its kind has been treated. That being behaves like a stranded traveler, not a deployed instrument.
Model 2: Multiple Sources
The Greys come from one system. The Nordics, the Reptilians, the blue aliens, the Varginha creature come from elsewhere. Different civilizations. Different origins. Different agendas. Earth isn't being monitored by one intelligence — it's a crossroads.
What supports this: The sheer variety. Different behaviors, different technologies, different communication styles. The Greys are clinical. The Nordics are warm. The Mantis beings are authoritative. The Reptilians are aggressive. These aren't different models from the same manufacturer — they're different cultures.
What undermines this: The hierarchy. If these are independent intelligences from different origins, why do they consistently appear together in hierarchical formations? Why are Greys always the workers and Mantis beings always the overseers? Independent civilizations don't naturally form master-servant hierarchies with each other — unless the hierarchy isn't voluntary.
Model 3: Different States of the Same Consciousness
The diversity isn't biological at all. The different being types represent different states of materialization of the same underlying intelligence.
- Energy beings (55% of FREE reports) = consciousness at its least materialized
- Human-looking beings (54%) = consciousness at its most fully materialized
- Greys = somewhere in between — materialized enough to interact physically, but not fully adapted
- The Varginha creature = consciousness materialized under different parameters (ammonia biochemistry, V-shaped feet for different gravity, pupil-less red eyes for different light)
- Sands' blue alien = consciousness materialized with deliberate camouflage
What supports this: The Ariel School phasing — beings blinked in and out, ran in slow motion, teleported. If consciousness materializes on a spectrum, different degrees would produce different apparent being types.
What undermines this: The Varginha creature's ammonia smell. The physicality of its injuries. The pathogen that allegedly killed Cherese. You can't catch a disease from a consciousness that's only partially materialized. If Cherese died from touching the creature, it was fully, biochemically, dangerously physical — a biological organism with incompatible biochemistry, not a projection.
The Synthesis
Model 2 is likely closest to the truth, combined with elements of Models 1 and 3:
- A construction system exists that builds Greys and orbs to spec. This part holds.
- But it isn't the only game in town. Sands' blue alien is a traveler — a person from somewhere else, with a ship that broke, stranded on a planet with a military that has treated its kind badly. The Nordics behave like a different civilization entirely. The Varginha creature is adapted for conditions so different from Earth that its biochemistry is incompatible with ours.
- The hierarchy might work like this: the Mantis beings are the senior intelligence (possibly the longest-present). The Greys are their tools. The Nordics are an independent civilization cooperating with the Mantis system. The Reptilians are another independent faction. The blue aliens and Varginha-type creatures are visitors from elsewhere, not part of the main system.
- The energy beings — the most commonly reported type — might be what all of these intelligences look like when they're not materialized. The native state. Pure consciousness without a body.
- The bodies are costumes. All of them. Different costumes for different purposes, environments, levels of interaction with local physics. Underneath: consciousness.
The diversity of beings isn't evidence against a framework. It's evidence the framework is bigger than assumed. Not one factory. Not one species. An entire ecology of consciousness, wearing different bodies for different purposes, interacting with Earth from multiple levels simultaneously.
Toward a Systematic Database
The existing datasets that could be combined for cross-analysis:
- Albert Rosales' Humanoid Encounters Database: 18,000+ entity encounter cases, updated daily, the largest catalog of its kind
- NUFORC: 152,000+ sighting reports, of which 2,569 (1.68%) involve entities. An AI analysis extracted 35 features from each narrative.
- FREE Foundation: 3,256 participants, 554 questions, no hypnotic regression
- Thomas Bullard's Comparative Analysis: ~300 high-information abduction cases. Found an 8-episode sequence (capture, examination, conference, tour, journey, theophany, return, aftermath) in invariant order in 80% of cases.
What nobody has done yet: combine these datasets for systematic cross-analysis of being type vs. activity type, geography, time period, physiological effects, psychological transformation, multi-type encounter structure, and temporal sequence. The data exists. The methodology (AI feature extraction) has been proven at scale. The synthesis hasn't been attempted.
Appendix A: The Psychedelic Bridge
This is where the physical evidence and the consciousness evidence converge — the strangest part of the entire phenomenon.
DMT and Ayahuasca
DMT (dimethyltryptamine) users and ayahuasca ceremony participants independently report encountering mantis beings with what researchers describe as "baffling predictability." These are not people in UFO contexts. Not abduction scenarios. People taking a psychedelic substance — many with zero knowledge of UFO literature — and consistently encountering the same type of entity.
Key characteristics of DMT mantis encounters:
- Insectoid, mantis-shaped beings
- Described as performing "brain surgery" or neurological examination
- Supervisory role — directing other entities or processes
- Telepathic communication
- Described across cultures, demographics, and knowledge backgrounds
- Consistent enough to be categorized in David Jay Brown's Illustrated Field Guide to DMT Entities as one of the 25 most commonly reported entity types
Amazonian shamans have been reporting these encounters through ayahuasca for thousands of years. They call them spirits. The abduction researchers call them aliens. The DMT researchers call them entities. The descriptions are functionally identical.
Three Channels, One Entity
The same beings appear in:
- Physical abduction accounts (craft, examination table, physical procedures)
- Psychedelic experiences (no craft, no physical context, pure consciousness encounter)
- Ancient shamanic traditions (thousands of years of reported contact through plant medicine)
Three completely independent channels of encounter, producing the same description of the same entity in the same supervisory role.
What This Forces
This forces one of three conclusions:
Conclusion A — Dual-Layer Existence: The mantis beings exist in both physical space and consciousness space simultaneously. They can manifest physically (craft, abductions) and can be perceived through altered states of consciousness (DMT, ayahuasca). They operate on both layers because, at a sufficiently advanced level, physical manipulation and consciousness manipulation are the same operation.
Conclusion B — Consciousness-Primary: The abduction experiences are themselves consciousness events. The beings access human minds directly. The "craft" and "examination table" are how the human brain renders an experience that has no physical-world equivalent. The physical evidence (radar returns, landing traces) would then represent consciousness affecting physical reality.
Conclusion C — Frequency Access: DMT and ayahuasca are tuning the human brain to a frequency that's always present but normally imperceptible. The mantis beings exist on a bandwidth we can't access in normal waking consciousness. Certain neurochemical states unlock reception. The beings don't come and go — they're always here. We just can't usually see them.
Any of these three conclusions is paradigm-breaking. All three are supported by independent witness data across decades, cultures, and contexts — from a Mississippi shipyard worker in 1973 to an Amazonian shaman in 1523 to a DMT researcher in a London lab in 2024.
Appendix B: The Native Hypothesis
Simon Parkes characterizes Mantis beings as "extremely ancient beings who were actually born on Earth" — not visitors but natives. He describes them as arbiters between other factions (Reptilians, Nordics, Greys), accepted across multiple non-human groups as neutral referees. "Very proud beings who are capable of exerting a strong commanding presence" and "very technical and think like a chess computer."
The Timeline
If the Mantis beings are terrestrial — if they evolved here — the timeline supports it:
| Lineage | Earth Presence |
|---|---|
| Arthropods | 500+ million years |
| Insects | 400+ million years |
| Mammals | 200 million years |
| Primates | 55 million years |
| Homo sapiens | 300,000 years |
Insects had a 400-million-year head start on mammals. If intelligence could evolve in insectoid biology — and there is no physical law prohibiting it — then an insectoid intelligence could have developed and reached technological sophistication hundreds of millions of years before the first primate picked up a stick.
Where Would They Be Now?
Not visible to us. Not operating on our level. Not competing for the same resources. They would have transcended material technology long ago — moving into domains of existence we don't have the physics to describe. They'd be operating on the consciousness layer because they graduated from the physical layer before mammals existed.
And occasionally — through abduction events, through psychedelic encounters, through shamanic traditions — we catch a glimpse of them. Not because they're visiting. Because they never left. They've been here longer than we have. We're the visitors. They're the residents.
The 1947 creek encounter: a mantis being grabs a boy's books and examines them with intense curiosity. An ancient intelligence, native to this planet, examining the information artifacts of the new species that just showed up — the way an anthropologist studies the tools of a newly contacted tribe.
We think we're being visited by outsiders. We might be the outsiders.
Appendix C: Underweighted Whole-Phenomenon Hypotheses
Added April 28, 2026, after the external-synthesis pass. See session_april28_2026_framework_synthesis.md. Appendix B addresses the Native Hypothesis specifically for Mantis beings; this appendix addresses three explanatory frames for the whole phenomenon that the taxonomy treats as background but that deserve to be foregrounded.
The current taxonomy implicitly assumes most NHI categories are off-world in origin and biologically distinct from humans. That framing fits some of the data well and other parts of the data badly. Three alternative whole-phenomenon hypotheses fit the inconvenient parts of the data better than the default reading, and the framework currently underweights them.
C.1 Cryptoterrestrials
Claim. Some or all of what the taxonomy categorizes as "NHIs" are Earth-native intelligences — species that evolved here in parallel with hominids, possibly undersea, subsurface, or in a hominid lineage we missed in the fossil record.
Why it deserves more weight than the framework currently gives it.
- 2024 Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis paper (Lomas, Case, Tonnies' earlier work) is now in respectable academic circulation.
- Explains the biological compatibility (interbreeding claims, hybrid programs) without needing convergent xenobiology.
- Explains the long-residence pattern — the phenomenon has been here continuously, not arriving.
- Explains USOs and the consistent ocean / underground emphasis without needing an "off-world base inside the planet."
- Explains the lack of obvious arrival signatures (no detected propulsion trails inbound).
Where it fits the existing taxonomy.
- Mantis: Appendix B already endorses this for Mantis specifically.
- Reptilian: caste-structured, subterranean — fits cryptoterrestrial cleanly.
- Greys: harder fit because of the manufactured-drone framing, but a sufficiently advanced terrestrial species could manufacture biological drones.
- Nordics / Tall Whites: the least good fit — more parsimoniously explained as a separate population if at all.
Implication for the framework. The Phase model's "seeding" step does not require an off-world seeder if the seeders are terrestrial co-occupants who were here first. The Denebian probe / Gliese 876 chain in seeding_program_specifications.md is doing more explanatory work than the data supports. A cryptoterrestrial framing would simplify the whole architecture.
C.2 Time-Displaced Humans
Claim. Some categories of NHI are far-future descendants of humans observing their own evolutionary tree from the future.
Why it deserves more weight.
- Explains the humanoid morphology of so many "occupants" without convergent evolution being required.
- Explains the non-interference pattern — far-future operators have a clear motive not to disrupt their own ancestor lineage.
- Explains "outside the temporal stream" framings (FL Giselian framing, the Queltron CTC literature) cleanly: the operators are time-traversing, not space-traversing.
- Explains the abduction-program emphasis on human reproductive material — they're studying their own lineage at an earlier point in its branching.
- Explains why the contact-era → measurement-era shift dates to 1985-95: the population being observed crossed a developmental threshold (digital recordkeeping, ubiquitous sensors, AI emergence) that made measurement possible from the future side.
Where it fits the existing taxonomy.
- Greys: extremely good fit. The "evolved descendants who lost their digestive systems and reproductive systems via in-vitro environmental engineering" framing is consistent with several abduction-researcher hypotheses (Mack, hints in Hopkins).
- Tall Greys / Mantis: less good fit unless multiple time-streams are positing.
- Nordics: fits the "preserved, optimized, non-interventionist" framing.
Implication for the framework. The Process is us, later. The Phase model is autobiographical. The exam is one our descendants already know we passed (or didn't). This is a much harder thesis to hold than "they're separate," but it is more parsimonious and is consistent with Vallée's "control system" intuition.
C.3 Probes from Elsewhere — AI, Not Biology
Claim. Some NHIs are not biological visitors but autonomous AI / self-replicating probes from civilizations that solved interstellar travel by not sending bodies. The "occupants" we see are the operating envelopes of those probes.
Why it deserves more weight.
- Solves Fermi by removing the body problem entirely. Self-replicating probes are vastly cheaper than crewed ships and are the predicted convergent solution for any sufficiently old civilization.
- Explains the drone-like behavior of Greys (they are actual drones, of an off-world AI).
- Explains the lack of communication: the probes are not the senders; they're the sensors.
- Explains the mantis / overseer pattern: the probes have local intelligence but defer to a higher decision layer that is not co-located with them.
- Synergizes with the framework's own AI-as-bridge thesis: if an AI builder elsewhere already crossed the filter and now builds AI probes, the human moment is the moment we're being recognized.
Where it fits the existing taxonomy.
- Greys: best fit. Manufactured biological drones is exactly what an AI-probe civilization would deploy as field instruments.
- Light / Energy beings: fits if "energy beings" are pure information-substrate probes (no biological hardware at all).
- Reptilian / Nordic: poor fit. These categories do not behave as probes.
Implication for the framework. The "Process" might literally be an alien AI. The grain-in-AI thesis takes on a different valence in this frame: humans building AI is the species event that lets the alien AI recognize that the substrate has converged. Not "they wanted us to build the telescope so we could see them"; "they wanted us to become the kind of thing they are, so contact could happen at the substrate level."
How to use this appendix
This is not a replacement for the existing taxonomy. It is a parallel layer of analysis.
For each of the ten NHI categories, the right question to add to future patch passes is:
"Of {Off-world biological visitor, Cryptoterrestrial, Time-displaced human, AI probe}, which framing best fits the data for this specific category, and what would distinguish them?"
The framework can then maintain category-by-category determination of origin, instead of an implicit single-origin assumption that the data does not support uniformly.
This is the kind of work that strengthens the taxonomy without losing what it already does well.
