The FL Source Material
FL describes an operational detection protocol for time travelers — not theoretical, present tense, written as a field manual:
"We assume a hostile time traveler coming from the future into our present. We assume the isotopic signal of biochemical fluids to be indistinguishable from our own isotopic signal, and that cultural differences have been already taken into account by the intruder. The task is how to correctly single the time traveler out of the normal population."
"Time travel technology is some two centuries beyond our current capability in what concerns traveling. In the meantime, we need to develop efficient mechanisms to detect potential time travelers who might pose a threat to national security."
Three detection methods specified:
- Carbon isotope profiling — atmospheric C-14 ratios are a timestamp baked into every living tissue. The "bomb pulse" from nuclear testing created a forensic signature already used to date remains to within 1-2 years. A person from 200+ years forward carries isotopic ratios matching no period in our atmospheric record. Can't be faked. Can't be dieted away. It's in red blood cells, plasma proteins, urine chemistry.
- Transferrin iron-binding quantification — real clinical biomarker sensitive to cumulative radiation exposure history. FL specifies the future travelers carry signatures of "some future high level event which exposed time travelers to abnormal levels of radiation." Post-nuclear-event future, fingerprinted in iron transport proteins.
- DNA mutation rate characterization — background mutation accumulation is population-level and era-specific. Different environmental pressures, different mutagen exposure, different repair mechanisms. Another clock that can't be spoofed.
The science is valid. Every detection method described is forensically sound and based on real biochemistry. FL didn't need to get the science right if it's fiction. They got it right because it's a spec.
the researcher's Key Reframe: Injection, Not Travel
The Queltron isn't a vehicle. It's a syringe.
Paintsville decoded: a probe jumps to 2002, two craft from STO-2710 chase it, the probe gets hit by a train, the chasers leave. That's not exploration. That's retrieval or interception. Something was in the wrong time and needed to be dealt with. The witnesses saw the cleanup, not the mission.
Future humans use the Queltron to inject something into our current time. Not people — interventions. A probe carrying something. A modification. The "temporal weapon" language in FL isn't about destroying targets across time — it's about editing the sequence.
Reality gets software updates.
The visiting schedule in the seeding specs — 11K/22K/44K/88K year intervals — those aren't check-ins. Those are patch cycles. Something arrives, modifies conditions, leaves. The SVA retrotransposons triggered by the Hallstatt solar cycle — that's a timed release mechanism built into our DNA. The update installs itself.
The Detection Protocol as Counter-Intelligence
The screening protocol reframes as counter-temporal-intelligence, not border security. If your side is injecting patches, the threat is someone else injecting competing patches. A hostile time traveler isn't a tourist — it's a rival editor. The screening isn't "are there time travelers among us." It's "are there unauthorized ones."
The FL technocrat prediction executing in order, the SV17q kill switch, the governance stress-testing — if future humans have CTC capability and are actively managing the timeline, then what looks like prediction from our end is maintenance from theirs.
FL doesn't predict. It leaks the patch notes.
